The Precious History of Dakry Olive Oil. From Ancient Messinia to a Modern Mediterranean House.

The story of Dakry does not begin with a bottle. It begins with a landscape where olive trees have shaped food, trade, culture and everyday life for thousands of years. From the Mycenaean world of Nestor to the ports of Methoni and Koroni, and from an Easter table in 2021 to an international Greek gastronomy house, this is a story of continuity.

A Land Shaped by the Olive

In Messinia, olive oil is not simply a product. It is part of the memory of the land.

Long before modern brands, export markets and designed bottles, olives and olive oil were already part of the economic and cultural fabric of Messinia.

Archaeology, written records and centuries of trade all point toward an extraordinary continuity of olive cultivation in this corner of the Peloponnese.

Mycenaean Messinia

The fingerprints of olive oil at the Palace of Nestor

The story reaches deep into antiquity. Excavations at the Palace of Nestor near ancient Pylos uncovered around 1,200 clay tablets written in Linear B, offering rare insight into the economy and everyday life of Mycenaean Messinia during the 14th and 13th centuries BC.

Olive oil appears as an important commodity within this organised world. Archaeological evidence from the palace includes storage spaces and vessels associated with oil, while the written records demonstrate that olives and olive products already held economic significance.

Even older traces exist in the region. Olive stones dating to approximately 1900 BC have been discovered at Karpofora, while archaeological and pollen evidence demonstrates the deep roots of olive cultivation in the wider Pylos area.

The First Chapter

More than three millennia before Dakry, Messinia was already producing, storing and valuing olive oil as part of an organised agricultural economy.

The Koroneiki Heritage

A small olive with an extraordinary history

The Koroneiki variety is inseparably connected with the southern Messinian landscape. Its very name points toward Koroni, one of the historic centres of olive cultivation and trade.

Small in size yet prized for the character of its oil, Koroneiki would become one of Greece’s defining olive varieties and a living link between the agricultural history of Messinia and the Extra Virgin Olive Oil produced there today.

02
Medieval Trade

Methoni and Koroni became gateways of Mediterranean olive oil

As Mediterranean maritime trade expanded, Methoni and Koroni became increasingly important ports for the movement of agricultural goods, including olive oil.

By the later Middle Ages and during Venetian influence in the region, southern Messinia had developed into one of the most important olive growing zones of the Peloponnese.

Olive cultivation was encouraged, production expanded and oil moved through the ports toward the wider Mediterranean and European markets.

The significance of Methoni and Koroni was therefore not accidental. Geography, agricultural knowledge and access to maritime trade combined to turn the southern Messinian landscape into a sophisticated olive oil economy.

For centuries, olive oil left Messinia through its ports. Today, the same land continues to travel beyond Greece, one bottle at a time.

03
Venetian Messinia

When olive cultivation became an organised economic force

During the Venetian periods, policies encouraging cultivation contributed to a further expansion of the Messinian olive landscape.

Historical sources describe extensive olive groves, numerous presses and a thriving system of cultivation, storage, commerce and export centred particularly around Koroni and Methoni.

By the beginning of the 18th century, the scale of production was remarkable.

A Living Heritage

The centuries changed. The knowledge never completely disappeared.

Agricultural priorities, markets and populations changed repeatedly over the centuries. Other crops gained importance and centres of trade shifted.

Yet olive cultivation remained part of Messinian life. Knowledge passed between generations, and the same landscape continued to produce the fruit that had shaped its economy since antiquity.

It is within this long cultural memory that the modern story of Dakry begins.

Where Everything Began

Centuries of Messinian history met a new beginning.

At an Easter table in the spring of 2021, Ioannis Kryfos and Mariangela Drakonaki met for the first time.

A shared appreciation for Greek flavour, beautiful objects, hospitality and the character of the land became the quiet first seed of what would later become Dakry.

The idea was never simply to place another olive oil on a shelf. It was to build a contemporary expression of Greek gastronomy capable of carrying origin, quality, aesthetics and emotion together.

A Dakry Story · Chapter by Chapter

From one idea to a Mediterranean house

What began quietly in 2021 gradually took physical form, then expanded beyond Greece.

AUGUST 2023

The First Form

Dakry began taking shape through its first logo, e shop and a small base inside a home storeroom. The first orders arrived and the idea became a functioning brand.

MARCH 2024

A Space of Our Own

An old ground floor property in Dafni was transformed into approximately 100 square metres of offices and warehouse space, becoming the operational base for growing orders and early exports.

JULY 2024

The Gift of Experience

Dakry gift boxes emerged as carefully curated experiences, bringing together Greek products, presentation and a visual identity designed to make the act of gifting feel ceremonial.

JANUARY 2025

A Moment of Realisation

After a demanding Christmas season, around 600 gift boxes had been delivered. The company was no longer only an experiment. Customers were returning and the Dakry language was becoming recognisable.

2026 · The Mediterranean Welcome

Rooted in Messinia. Crafted for the world.

Today, Dakry enters a more mature chapter. Partnerships continue to grow, international presence continues to expand and the visual world of the brand continues to evolve.

Yet the essential idea remains unchanged: growth should never come at the cost of origin.

From Mycenaean storage jars to Venetian trade routes, from generations of Koroneiki cultivation to a contemporary bottle of Dakry Extra Virgin Olive Oil, every chapter returns to the same landscape.
