honey has been used as a sweetener and as a cosmetic because of its therapeutic properties for almost 8,000 years.
The health benefits are numerous and have been proven through dozens of scientific studies.
If you’re still not convinced about adding them to your daily diet, here are five reasons why you should do so immediately.
1. for skin hydration
Honey can help in the treatment of dry skin and acne. The moisturizing properties of honey are due to its sugar content, which increases the skin’s ability to retain water. Honey can be applied directly to the skin, combined with other natural ingredients (e.g. avocado, olive oil, lemon) to make homemade face creams or purchased as an ingredient in skin care products. To deeply moisturize the facial skin, apply honey directly after a hot shower and rinse with plenty of water after 20 minutes.
2. excellent source of antioxidants
The antioxidants we consume from our diet prevent cellular damage caused by free radicals and prevent chronic diseases such as ageing and heart disease. The darker the colour of honey, the higher its antioxidant content. To avoid excessive sugar intake, the American Heart Association recommends that your daily consumption of honey should not exceed one and a half tablespoons.
3. medicine for the Hangover
After a night of heavy drinking, a little honey on bread is just the thing. According to scientists at the Royal Society of Chemistry, honey is the most effective hangover remedy. Its beneficial effect is due to fructose, which helps the body to metabolize and reject alcohol faster.
4. treatment of cough
Who hasn’t had a cup of hot tea with honey when they have a sore throat or cough, and according to a study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, honey provides great relief to children who can’t sleep because of a persistent cough, but in older people honey has the same effect.
5. wound healing
Perhaps the best known application of honey in medical practice is in the treatment of wounds and pain; a 2011 study published in The Scientific World Journal showed that honey promotes tissue regeneration and minimizes scarring after injury.
